Here is a quick tutorial on how to create an animated GIF using Photoshop CS$ or CS5. Okay then! Let’s say you have some images that you want to sequence together as in an animated GIF. There are tons of websites and programs that offer this, however, if your like me you want to do it with your favorite tools and incorporate it into your regular workflow. Adobe Photoshop CS4 and CS5 have some features that make creating animated gifs which can be used for web banners and website animations. Take a look below, it’s a fast and simple procedure.

Gather the images you want to animate and place them into Photoshop as individual layers.

Rearrange the layers into the correct order, if necessary.

Open the Animation Palette (Window -> Animation).

In the Animation Palette Menu (found at the top right corner of the palette), click [Make Frames From Layers].

If you want to adjust the duration of individual frames then verify you are in the frame and not the timeline view (the icon in the lower right of the Animation Pallet). In frame view you will see thumbnail icons of your layers, click the icon in the lower right corner (the hover text will say “Convert to Frame Animation”). Now, back in the Animation palette menu, click Select All Frames.

Click the drop down button just underneath each frame image to select a frame duration.

Use the lower left menu in the Animation Palette to change how many times the animation will loop; either a fixed number of times, or forever.

Once you have ordered your frames and set the frame timing then you can save the image. [Click File > Save for Web & Devices] Make sure you set the file format to GIF and then save the image!
